Improving Health Outcomes with Local, National and Global Collaborations

Redeemer's University is actively involved in collaborations with local, national, and global health institutions aimed at improving health and well-being outcomes. A key pillar of this effort is our African Center of Excellence for the Genomics of Infectious Diseases (ACEGID), which plays a pivotal role in advancing healthcare systems in Nigeria, Africa, and globally.
Through ACEGID, Redeemer's University contributes to cutting-edge research in infectious diseases such as malaria, Lassa fever, Ebola, and more recently, COVID-19. Our collaboration with national health agencies and global partners such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) has led to significant advancements in the detection, prevention, and treatment of infectious diseases. ACEGID’s work has also enhanced the capacity of local health institutions by providing vital training for healthcare professionals, expanding diagnostic capabilities, and strengthening health infrastructure. These partnerships enable us to play a critical role in shaping the future of healthcare across Africa and the world. Local Collaborations
ACEGID played a pivotal role in helping Nigeria avert a potential Ebola disaster in 2014. By rapidly sequencing the virus and collaborating with local health institutions, ACEGID provided timely data that aided in the containment of the outbreak READ MORE
National and African Collaborations
ACEGID continues to strengthen Africa’s capacity to respond to outbreaks through training programs for African scientists, including a recent program focused on Mpox virus detection and response READ MORE. By equipping scientists with next-generation sequencing and bioinformatics skills, ACEGID ensures that Africa Nations are better prepared for future health crises.
Poor sanitation and hygiene are major setbacks in efforts to control malaria in Nigeria. In a symposium at Redeemer’s University, experts emphasized that improper waste disposal, stagnant water, and inadequate sanitation practices create breeding grounds for mosquitoes, which spread malaria. These issues undermine malaria prevention programs despite ongoing efforts. The need for better education on hygiene and comprehensive community-level interventions was stressed as crucial for controlling the disease. For more details, you can read the full article here
Global Collaborations
On the global stage, ACEGID has partnered with Illumina, a leader in sequencing technology, to establish a joint Genomics and Bioinformatics Academy aimed at training 1,000 African researchers. This partnership will boost Africa’s capacity for genomic research, including precision medicine and cancer therapies READ MORE
